dream karaoke

[Hwan]

A dream quickie: I dreamt that John Woo had seen an animated short I had made (it was a story about a boy leaving his swamp to rescue a girl who lived in the clouds) and had subsequently hired me to help make a Hollywood version. But when I showed up at the studio, they wouldn't listen to any of my input, and the resultant film was nothing like my original vision. It also sucked hard.

Saturday Angela and I met up with the SetoTang gang, plus Kirs and Adam and Orbhead. Dinner at Spring Roll (coccyx jokes, a ScarlettJohansson waitress remind-alike, lots of pictures, and (Angela) going to refill the parking meter, Adam's hoitburn). Dropped off the KirsDam couple at their hotel, then to korea-town for some karaoke. The first place was swanky but full, a large wall of monitors and black leather couches to match the dark stylings. The second was a low key, undergound place, mirrors reflecting the white walls, lined with laserdiscs. We booked a small room, but with plenty of space for the six of us. Along with the usual trappings, two tambourines were provided, one of them with electronic lights that lit up with shaking. I can't remember all the songs (we were there for a little over an hour). Uh, a few Nirvana ones (including "All Apologies", "Heart-Shaped Box"), Billy Joel's "Piano Man", U2's "Elevation", G'n'R "Sweet Child 'O Mine", Ace of Base "All That She Wants", "New York, New York". I sang The Strokes' "Is This It" solo, and YMCA's "In The Navy" with Dman. I'm pretty sure karaoke is japanese for "sing it like you just don't care".

anger roadrage

Pulling up to the lights before my street I pass by a pale blue Toyota in the opposite lane, sitting in the middle of the intersection, wanting to make a left. I'm the last of a group of vehicles and am moving somewhat slowly, since I'm nearing my turning. And I see that the driver of the Toyota is giving me the finger.

!!!!

I quickly merge into the far right lane, zip into the parking lot and locate the blue Toyota. I drive right up behind him and lean into my horn. He slowly turns into a space, and I park so that my car is blocking his only exit. I jump out and confront him as he steps out of his car. A verbal barrage just short of shouting emits from my mouth.

Thankfully, luckily, we resolved my bristling temper without violence or hard feelings. The poor man appeared unruffled by my tirade and was able to calm me down quickly (his response was that he was rubbing his forehead with his middle finger, which he often does and is aware that people sometimes mistake it for for flipping the bird). Actually, after my initial outburst, I could feel myself say, "What the hey am I doing?" and sort of wanted to get out of there. From whence does this aggression flow? Does the trumpet blare for me?

I would estimate that he was in his late 30s, early 40s. But ill-mannered teenagers rile me too.

Craven Moorehead (hp)
I wish you had tried that with me and you wouldn't have survived to post this crap. Who do you think you are, some badass? You're a little punk and you think you're something that you're not. Let me guess, you drive one of those annoying little rice rockets with the fart pipe muffler?

2010/08/03 Hwan I won't say that all is well (for I don't believe it to be so), but I am better. Thanks to all for asking!

2010/07/20 llamariffic Hmm, macrocytosis here as well, but to be honest I've had it since before I truly embarked on drinking as a proper hobby. Similarly, stopped drinking entirely, and it didn't go away. Just one of those things, I think.
2010/07/19 girl ack!! It's weird to think that I am now a parental unit. It was nice to see you hwan!
2010/05/21 Hwan I recall trying earplugs well back in my undergrad years, to mixed results. My sleep was troubled by feelings of claustrophobia. I also have a, perhaps unfounded, fear of not hearing the essential alarm in the mornings. However, I may give these another go, thanks.
2010/05/21 llamatron Have you tried sleeping with earplugs? My flat faces out onto a main road, so I've started using the standard foam plugs. It took a few nights to get used to them, but they make a big difference.
2010/05/21 girl The original swedish title: "Men who hate women". I'm not sure if it's the fault of the translation, but I never liked the reporter dude.
