![[Hwan]](images/journal/trex_01.jpg) Oh man! I really screwed up my windows for a while there -- I had stopped my RPC service, not realizing how important it was to the functioning of Win2K. Shortly thereafter, I managed to hang my machine by alt-tabbing between WarCraft 3 and my ATI TV. And thus began a two hour struggle, where everything was working, but only in bits and pieces. My network was working, but I couldn't see the properties for it. In fact, I couldn't see the properties for any of my hardware devices. I could surf, but Javascript wouldn't work. I couldn't open new windows by right-mouse-clicking and choosing "Open In New Window", I had to do it by clicking File > New > Window. I fiddled around but I actually was able to find the solution to my problem. Essentially, one has to set the RPC service to run again on next boot up. Unfortunately, this can only be done by changing a registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs] and you need to set the value: "Start"=dword:00000002 and then upon reboot everything will be as right as rain. Computers.. only when you break them do you realize how happy you were.
